In its bid to grow beyond Jamshedpur Public Health & Horticulture Services (PH&HS) of JUSCO has bagged a Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management project at Kollam, Kerala. The agreement was signed between Mr. K. Ajikumaran, Project Manager, Project Implementation Unit- Kerala Sustainable Urban Development project (KSUDP), Kollam and Capt. Dhananjay Mishra, Chief-PH & HS, JUSCO on 29 July 2008. The Hon‘ble Mayor of Kollam Corporation Sh. B. Padmalochanam, present at the ceremony expressed his happiness on the signing of the agreement and assured full cooperation from his team to JUSCO. Smt. A.K. Sasikala, Secretary-Kollam Corporation along with officials from Project Implementation Unit (PIU) - Kollam and JUSCO were also present during the signing of the agreement.
The project has been awarded by Govt. of Kerala and is funded by Asian Development Bank. The duration of the project is 15 months.
The scope of work involves establishment of an integrated municipal solid waste processing and disposal facility at Kuripuzza, located 5 km from city of Kollam having a population of approx 3 lacs, with MSW generation rate of 110 tonnes per day. The project further requires establishing a new engineered sanitary landfill facility and closure of existing municipal solid waste dump site along with erection and commissioning of an electromechanical compost plant and establishment of leachate treatment plant for leachate generated from compost and landfill facility.
This project will help Kollam city comply with MSW (Management & Handling Rules, 2000) and contribute towards ecological conservation of Asthmudi Lake, which is cited under Ramser Convention of International Wetlands, by providing treatment for leachate from solid waste dump site located at Kuripuzza.
This project shall further strengthen JUSCO’s presence in the emerging urban waste management sector in southern part of country. |
